Bolsheviks were not the only people considered Reds; in fact, any one on the far left of the political spectrum or any European immigrants were considered a "Red". In the face of the Red Scare, the Klu Klux Klan reappeared to attack these alleged communists.
The KKK incited violence to instill fear into US immigrants in an attempt to "preserve the American culture". They were motivated, of course, by nativism: blatant xenophobia to "protect" native-born Americans. The KKK was estimated to have between 3 to 8 million members during this time and attempted to dominate politics.
Their focus on lynching of blacks was broadened to lynching anyone foreign, and the hysteria of the Red Scare allowed them to use violent methods.
